Being a Barnardos Buddy means you will walk alongside the children we are privileged to support. You will follow their journey as they overcome their trauma and begin to heal. You will follow the progress of a real child who represents thousands of others in Barnardos care.

strip How the Barnardos Buddies program works

When you become a Barnardos Buddy, it brings much needed hope to abused and vulnerable children in our care.

 These are children who the courts have removed from their parents due to severe physical and/or sexual abuse or neglect. Your support will provide a range of specialised services, allowing them to heal from trauma and reach their full potential.

 This holistic approach allows us to work together with children, young people, families and foster parents to break the cycle of disadvantage. To help build safe, nurturing and stable homes for vulnerable children in Australia.

Follow your child's progress

As a Buddy you will begin a journey with your Barnardos child. You will receive regular updates on their progress. We will also keep you up to date with our work that your generosity makes possible.

Be their buddy!

As your Barnardos child’s Buddy, you can write a few words of encouragement to them. If you would like to, you can send them a birthday card or even a Christmas message. It means a lot to these children to know that somebody is thinking of them!

As a Barnardos Buddy you will follow the progress of a real child or young person who represents thousands of others receiving support from Barnardos programs. You will hear about the real events in their life and the real issues they face. You’ll receive updates from their Barnardos caseworker, showing you how your generosity is transforming their life.

When you sign up, keep an eye on the post as you will receive a welcome pack with information about your Barnardos child and something special they have made for you. (To protect the privacy of each child we can't share real names or real photos.) We’ll then send you regular feedback from your child and their caseworker, so you can follow their journey and see how you are positively impacting their young life.

As a Barnardos Buddy you control how much you choose to donate each month. We find most of our Buddies donate between $30 - $50 per month, however the minimum requirement is $15 per month.
We acknowledge everyone’s circumstances are unique which is why we allow you to choose how much you donate each month (min $15). This means at any point in time you can phone our friendly Donor Care Team on 1800 061 000 to reduce your monthly gift or even put your monthly gift on hold. If you are unable to continue donating monthly you can make a one-off single gift here. You will still be helping Australian children in need of protection and receive updates from our programs and how your gifts are changing young lives.
Your monthly contributions can be deducted from either your nominated credit card or bank account via direct debit. Gifts will be deducted on the third Wednesday of each month.
You can choose if you would like to follow the journey of a boy or a girl when you sign up. You will then be paired with one of a small number of children in our care who have stepped forward to share their story with you. The children Barnardos work with all need our protection to deal with the challenges they are facing in their lives which is why we don’t use real photos or names.
Children and young people turn to Barnardos in times of desperate need and we never give up on them. We ask you to stick with your Barnardos child as they transform their life. This could take time and we hope your commitment will last as long as possible.
You will receive updates about one real child who is receiving help from Barnardos, however your gifts will support all the vulnerable children in our programs, so no one child is singled out for special treatment. While you will hear directly from your Barnardos child, your child represents thousands of other children in our programs. Your monthly donations will be directed to where the greatest need is for the children in our care, allowing your gift to have the greatest impact.
There is a chance that your child could leave the program. For example, they may be adopted, move home or their situation may change for a number of reasons. If this happens, we will let you know and introduce you to a new child who wants to share their story with you.
If your circumstances change and you are no longer in a position to help, please call our Donor Care Team on 1800 061 000, as there are other ways you can help that don't require the same level of commitment.
Yes, Barnardos will provide you with an opportunity to write to your Barnardos child. We also encourage you to send letters throughout the year. These children have stepped forward to be part of this program and to help other children like them. Knowing that someone they have never met cares enough to invest in their future gives these children hope. All correspondence is exchanged through Barnardos Australia to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
No, to protect the privacy of the children in our programs you will not be able to visit your Barnardos child.
