This festive season, too many families are struggling
In Australia, poverty steals more than just joy at Christmas — it robs children of safety, stability and a fair chance in life.
Here at Barnardos, we have seen a growing number of families being forced to rely on foodbanks, and we expect
this to get worse at Christmas time.
Without intervention, poverty can have a lifelong impact on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing – and their prospects
for the future. Without food, safety and security, their ability to concentrate at school and build crucial social relationships
can be seriously affected – often resulting in life-long hardship.
77,000 children needed homelessness support services in Australia in the past year^
