Sadly, the teenagers and young people we support are often overlooked when it comes to receiving gifts at Christmas, but they are equally in need of some happiness.

This year we have introduced Barnardos Gifts for Teens, where you can purchase a gift card online. We will then send the cards to our fabulous frontline staff to share with the young people they support each and every day.

Zahra's story

It was her first Christmas without her family.

Zahra had fled the civil war in Syria with her family, but life was hard in Australia too. Instead of finding safety, there was violence at home. She eventually ran away and was living in an abandoned warehouse when she first came to Barnardos. At the time she was stealing food to survive and not attending school. She felt worthless… like she didn’t matter.

Barnardos Youth Worker, Katia, has been working incredibly hard with Zahra to help her find accommodation and return to school. It has since turned her life around.

Receiving a gift card through the Barnardos Gifts for Kids Appeal also gave Zahra a sense of hope and the confidence that “someone really does care”.
